"I had the opportunity to meet Joseph Garcia in my Law Enforcement class during my senior year of high school. With his prior experience in policing, he was filled with knowledge and had appropriate teaching methods. He wasn't like other teachers; he took time out of his weekends to put together hands-on scenarios to help us comprehend the subjects he was teaching us. He had a unique way of making an instructional environment fun while learning. My class, the advanced class, was notably smaller than the other classes. Being smaller helped create heart-to-heart conversations on the learning topic or life lessons, where we could openly share our thoughts and concerns. With these candid discussions that he had with my class and the others, he connected with us on how to push ourselves to be better. "Having Mr. Garcia in a class was one of the best high school experiences for me. I met him my junior year, his first-year teaching at DHS. A whole new world opened for me after meeting Mr. Garcia. My junior year I was in a difficult position in my life. I didn't see myself going very far in life. I was consumed in addiction and was living everyday hoping it would be my last. Mr. Garcia gave me faith and told me that I could and would be whatever I pushed myself to become. He showed compassion and love for me in a way that helped me become the best I have ever been! I stopped showing aggression in every way I could and began to unravel the parts of myself that I was too scared to confront. I remember a story he told me about how he was in high school and a SRO at his school pushed him and guided him to be better, just like he did with me.
